"Oh, I gotta go, my damn weiner kids are listening..."

Summer is in full swing and I'm once again responsible for my own children. I have to remember to feed them in the middle of the day and you would not realize how many more dishes that generates. I was ready to switch to paper plates but then I remembered I'm all about saving the environment. We've been having a good time though and we're getting into a routine. I'm really lucky in that the girls like to play together and they have two neighbor friends they hang out with. So like today, I've seen them for about 10 minutes. I've been doing wifey things like vacuuming and thinking about what to prepare for dinner. I'm back into cooking and trying new recipes which I like. We're eating a lot healthier and simpler. I love summer!
Speaking of ruining the environment
I'm sure you've all see the commercial for the Kleenex Hand Towel. I find it offensive. Their claim is that you get all germy and sick from sharing the same hand towel in your home. In the commercial, they demonstrate this by showing a family using a white, washcloth size towel for an entire family to wipe their hands on. Yep, that will look gross after, like, THE FIRST PERSON USES IT! They then show the family using the Kleenex Hand Towel which are just paper towels that are dispensed from a plastic container that hangs on your wall. It's ingenious because you A) have to refill it and B) it preys on America's fear of GERMS. If you buy and use this, you're basically saying "screw you" to the earth.

Things I'm glad we purchased
Before I started working full-time we were just making it financially. This was fine but it meant we didn't have a lot of money for extras. Our yard in Santaquin was done by us on a very limited budget. We didn't have automatic sprinklers, which wasn't fun at all. When we moved into this house I made Ryan promise me we'd have them and he was on board also since he was usually the one moving hose to water. What I'm getting at, besides how awesome automatic sprinklers are, is that two incomes can be fun. It makes me happy to be contributing financially. With our extra funds we purchased a lovely fence. Now I'm free to get freaky in the backyard. Naked croquet anyone? ;)
What kid doesn't like a pile of dirt?

Now I don't have to see the Natural Light cans littered in the neighbor's back yard.

Another thing I'm glad we purchased is our trampoline. We didn't just buy the cheap Walmart one and it has proven it's worth. This week we had a wicked wind storm and our tramp was blown over. The thing has to weigh 300lbs but 80 mile/hour winds will do that. The net poles were completely bent and I was worried we wouldn't be able to bend them back so they'd be usable again. Ryan and I worked on them for a bit and then a friend came over and saw we needed help. A few minutes later, the neighbors were over with proper tools and helped us fix the metal poles. Tramp is now back up and functioning. We have certainly got our monies worth out of this purchase. The kids use it at least once a day and I have been known to join them showing off my spectacular front flip.

Lucy
We didn't purchase Lucy but she costs us money so I'm counting it. I like our cat and the kids, especially Hanna, love it. The cat eats this love up! It could care less about Ryan and I but follows those kids around the house like a dog. When they go to bed at night, it sits outside their doors and cries. She has her obnoxious cat habits but for a cat found in a tire, I'd say she is working out really well.
I find a lot of these pictures on Photo Booth. Should I be concerned?

Things get done and life is good

Look at us accomplishing things! The last few weeks have been pretty crazy around here. Ryan has been working hard in the yard and I've been working hard at school. I had my first parent teacher conferences and I think they went well. I had a number of parents say their kids loved me and loved coming to school, plus no complaints. I was very relieved when both 13 hour days were over and now kind of know what to expect for future conferences. Work still continues to kick my butt daily but I'm trying to take deep breaths and ride the wave. Some days I accomplish this, other days I start crying in guided reading because I feel like I'm failing my students. I'll find my groove. I've been struggling lately with my eating and exercising. I thought I'd lose weight when I started working but the stress has been making me snacky. I started spin classes again at the gym because I was getting bored with running. So far I haven't had to fight anyone for a bike like I did at Gold's. We'll see how it looks in January when all the resolution people put in their month of exercise. So yeah, this is the rambling I do inside my head when I feel bad about myself physically which is what has been going on lately.
The grass! It's very exciting for people who took years to get their yard "finished" at their old house. Don't be too jealous because all our sod was free. Our neighbors had coupons from when they built their houses and never used them. They love us so much, they gave us theirs. The sprinklers were not free but so, so worth it. Spring will be planting time because I have plans for a lot of trees.

Our regulation size croquet field in the backyard. We wanted an area that we could play games on and not worry about our ball rolling off a cliff or into a forest like at our old house.

Who is going to build me a big pergola? Come on, someone wants to do that. Please?

We gave our our front room when we built this house and until the girls move into the basement, we are without an office. Our computer hutch was getting stuffed full of papers etc, so we have been in the market for a desk type thing for our kitchen. Unfortunately it had to be only 22 inches wide. Karen worked her magic again and found us a tower from an entertainment system that fit perfectly. IKEA provided the office containers and I think it will work well.

I got a haircut! Chad sat me down and said, "Dark and bangs." I said, "Are you sure?" I'm getting used to it but I haven't had bangs since I was 8 so it's a weird feeling. Ryan said I looked like Veronica but a couple of kids at school said I looked like Velma from Scooby-Doo. I thought early 90's Brenda Walsh.

All the kids at the zoo. I'm glad I have good friends and that they put up with me.

Finally, the house

We've lived here for seven months and I'm finally getting around to posting house pictures on the blog. I kept thinking, "I'll wait until I hang this picture or get this decorated" but I finally realized that it's never going to be perfect so I might as well just do it now. We (well mostly Ryan) did a big cleaning of the house on Saturday so I thought it would be a perfect time to take photos. I did a couple of little videos in areas that are hard to photograph. I like living here, a lot. Santaquin was great too but I'm glad if we had to move, we moved to a place I like as well as this.

Not a staged photo, Ryan was actually making the bed. He's a pretty awesome husband and I would recommend all you unmarried women get a man like him. Lays sod during the day, then cleans the house at night. He's dreamy.

This is Grace's room and desk. I made them clean their rooms before they left to stay at Nana's. Sweet Grace, such a messy, messy girl but she did a good job of cleaning.

Grace put the sheets on her bed and made it, which is great because I hate changing sheets. I love that my kids are getting to the age where they can do my work.

Looking into Hanna's room. This child started to cry when I asked her to put the sheets on her bed because, "she had already made it for the pictures!" Girls.

This is looking in from the front door.

Front entry area. The desk was made by Ryan's grandpa and the painting was given to us by his grandma.

Looking from the living room to the front entry.

View of the living room from the kitchen. The one arch goes to the front entry and the other one goes to our bedroom. Orbs! Our house is so haunted.

Living room and those are the pendants lights we put in above the island. Ryan was terrified he was going to be electrocuted even though the electricity was turned off. He really does have an unnatural fear of electric shock.

Kitchen. Where I occasionally cook and Ryan cleans. I really like our Corian countertops. My favourite thing is the built in sink.

Dining area. I HATE the light over our kitchen table and am saving up for a new one. It was the best lighting package they had that we didn't have to upgrade to. I might have chosen differently now but I'll get the one I want soon.

Living room. I loves the gas fireplace. I camped out in front of it all winter. The painting was given to us by Ryan's grandma. They are the main reason we have furniture and art. Karen supplies all the other furniture. Shout out to Karen at the RC Willey Outlet in Provo!

Our bedroom and bathroom. I'm going to resist saying, "This is where the magic happens."

The girl's "wing". I really like them being on the opposite side of the house. It's like they don't even exist. "winky emoticon"

Gummi bear? It's been in my pocket; they're real warm and soft.

I was going to write this big explanation of how it all happened but it's been a long day and I'm tired. I got a call today from the principal at Beaumont Elementary School and he offered me a jobby-job. I said, "Me? Really? You really chose me? I'm so excited!" Well, I just said the excited part but I was thinking the other. So I'll be teaching grade one at Beaumont Elementary School (not the real name) next year and hopefully for many years after. I wanted to post a link to the school's website because I think it's a super cool school but I think it's best that I keep that part private. If you are my friend on Facebook or just my friend, you can google the real name and look at my new school. They use Macs so that's all I needed to know. It's still a bit much to wrap my brain around. I grew up hanging out at my mom's classrooms, then other people's classrooms and now I'll actually have my own classroom!

We dug trenches for our sprinkler system yesterday and it went really well. I'm excited to have actual sprinklers for the first time in our marriage. Look at us moving into the 20th century! I went to Target this evening and when I was pulling back into our driveway I noticed a few little kids in our trenches. They were playing in and filling up the trenches we spent hours digging! I rolled down the window and told them to stop and get out. They ran away and I went inside to tell Ryan about it. Meanwhile, the owner of the pasture behind us was flood irrigating and the water was running into our yard and collapsing our trenches. Ryan went to talk to him, got things worked out. He then walked into the front yard and those damn (milder curse than I want to use) kids were back filing in our trenches! Can you believe that? They came back after I told them to get out and decided they weren't finished. Both Ryan and I are feeling pretty upset about the whole thing. I have to go to work tomorrow and I'm worried that I'm going to come home to find our trenches filled in. It might be a xanax night.

She had made yet another wise shopping decision

I don't talk about my job much on here but man, I am really ready for the year to be over. For those who don't know what I do, I'm a reading tutor at an elementary school and on Wednesdays I work solely with a child who has Down's syndrome. I only work 3.5 days a week so don't feel too sorry for me, yet. Since the last week in April I have not been tutoring because of state testing. Instead, I sit in a room with the other tutors and babysit kids who aren't able to take the state tests. HOLY MOLY this is boring! We have little jobs to do but they involve things like colouring, pasting, cutting and folding. I feel like I'm in kindergarten. Karen said she would love to be paid to colour but I'm telling you, five hours of colouring is more than most adults can bear. Today I was entering data into the computer. I now have a special place in my heart for people who sit at a desk and enter data into a computer all day. After and hour was ready to jump out a window and run into traffic. There are periods where we get talking about The Amazing Race or Survivor and I think, "This isn't so bad." Then we run out of things to talk about and I go back to typing in silence. Today I was so tired, after I finished work at 2, I seriously considered going to my car, curling up in the back and sleeping for the hour before the kids got out. I had to call Kristin on the way home just so I could talk to someone and stay awake. I'm wondering if my new running schedule is catching up with me or if I'm just a big ol' puss.

I was thinking the other day about washing the bed sheets and then I remembered that involved a lot of work. It got me thinking about how often I wash our sheets and while I'm not going to admit it here, I'd like to have others admit it. So how often do you wash sheets? I want to know if I'm normal or some sort of dirty freak.

Updates:
The anniversary was great. Ryan and I ate some very delicious steak and then went shopping at the new Rack. Sadly nothing was found for either of us. We had planned to go to the midnight showing of Wolverine but both of us fell asleep at eleven. Kind of like our wedding night. The next day we went to the morning showing and then I made Ryan take me to Nordstrom. Long story short, Ryan kindly bought me the jeans I've been coveting for over a year. I told him he just made up for my mom not buying me Jordache jeans when I was 9.

My bacne is gone! Ryan hates it when I talk about this on the blog, "it's gross!" but it's my blog. I've been taking my medicine for a few months and the bacne seems to have cleared up. Just in time for Seven Peaks season. Oh and the laser hair removal seems to be going well also. I'd still recommend it but I'm hoping my last few touch-up sessions will get rid of it all.

I've been searching for the perfect garbage can for the kitchen. At our old house, our pantry was large enough to accommodate a garbage can but in this house it has to be out in the open. I wanted something that looked nice but also fit in the spot I had in mind. I bought a couple but the opening would hit the lip of the island counter-top. Ryan found this one at Costco and took me over to see if it was worthy, which it was. The best part is, it's touchless! I just put my hand out and it magically opens to receive my garbage. It's so awesome, I've made a video of it for you to watch. Also for those who are wondering, I'm waiting until I get my kitchen chairs (which are on back order) before I post pictures or mind-blowing multimedia presentation of the house.

*Doesn't the garbage can kind of remind you of the game Mr. Mouth?

Another day in paradise

Tonight Ryan went to check on the girls in the shower, mainly because they'd been in there for over 30 minutes. He walks in and finds Grace, naked and standing in the toilet. Yes, our eight year old was just casually standing in the toilet. Upon seeing Ryan and realizing she was caught doing something pretty crazy, she started to cry.

Ryan: What are you doing in the toilet?!

Grace: Hanna said she wanted to know what it felt like and then I wanted to.

While this is a scene neither of us wanted to walk in on, it does lend itself to great teasing. Tonight I asked Grace if she had cleaned her newly pierced ears and she said she had. Ryan interjected, "Not with toilet water, right?"

We spent most of today working on the interior of the house. We had bought a ceiling fan for the living room and pendant lights for over the island. Here's a little fact: Ryan is terrified of electricity. I don't know which he is more afraid of, electricity or spiders. No, it's definitely electricity. He almost had me get him one of my precious Xanax so he could wire these lights. He did a great job though and I'm very pleased with the results. I was able to get a nice nap in on the couch while he worked. Earlier in the day, Hanna and I took a trip to IKEA. I'd been promising her some room decor and today seemed like a good day to get that done. IKEA just rocks. Now I know some things might not be the greatest quality, but when you're looking for cheap decorations for a kids room, you can't beat it. I got her these adorable wall adhesives for her room for only $9.99 and I was able to put them up without much cursing.

She also picked out this butterfly print after I told her she couldn't have the photo of two Shetland ponies. (Mean but Shetland ponies are scary)

Then she picked out two of the KRABB mirrors because a lady has gots to look fine.

Meh. I said, M-E-H.

Meh kind of sums up my week which is why the blog was not happening. I had a stupid thing at work that stressed me out (got it taken care of) and then there is the usual trying-to-sell-house stress. On top of that, Ryan had to work a gang related homicide pretty much non-stop since Friday. Oh and then there are all the people that annoy me and suck my energy by trying not to punch them in the face when they give me the eye roll. Not doing so well on my resolution of trying to be nice. Please tell me there are people in your lives that just bug the living crap out of you. I can't be the only one right? I don't think I am that big of a social deviant.

I was buoyed up by the girl's SEPs (parent teacher interviews) this week. Grace is doing great and since they don't get a report card, I just go by what her teacher tells me. The one thing she really needs to work on is handwriting but don't most geniuses have poor handwriting, like the Unabomber? Hanna is also doing very well and because they do take standardized tests and are graded I am able to have tangible evidence of her genius. She is reading at a 13th grade level and Mensa has been courting her. No, that isn't true but she is doing very well.

Now on to the Cocomotion. Amanda gave me a Cocomotion for Christmas a couple of years back and I LOVES it. I wasn't really a hot chocolate person until I started making it this way. There is something about the ease of it. How it heats and stirs it for me, leaving a frothy top. It makes the kids happy and that's what I'm all about because I'm the bestest mom ever. Get yourself one! You'll thank me.

Hat Update
I received a phone call from my mom yesterday telling me that she was looking out the window and saw a little bit of beige in the snow. It was Hanna's winter hat she lost when we were there. Happy day! Now I can stop taking the Xanax. Thanks Mom.

That's a freebie

Our church ward split the Sunday we were driving home from Canada and I'm very pleased with the results. I don't want to get into it here but I was very happy our new ward came with a new bishop. When I heard about the change from Karen I thought, "That's a freebie." Speaking of church, I went with my mom in Magrath and in Relief Society they have a "good news minute" where the women can tell about something good that has happened to them. My mom raised her hand and her good news was that her entire family was home for Christmas. Then an obnoxious neighbor lady raised her hand and said, "She only has two children! All my children (she has six) except so and so were home with us." I wanted to jump across the isle and rip her tongue out but I was able to resist by telling myself, "She's an idiot."

I have returned to exercise with a renewed vigor after gaining what will remain an unnamed number of pounds over the holiday. Apparently sitting in a chair and eating multiple bags of dill pickle chips for two weeks will cause you to gain weight. I thought I was told this wouldn't happen but Grace isn't always right. I'm back doing spin three times a week with Shar (Grace's school teacher also) and have started going to the school gym two mornings a week to do circuit training with a few other neighborhood women. I was doing this last year but they failed to tell me it had started up again after the summer break. I could take this badly but I'm chalking it up to people being super self-involved and am letting it go. This morning was my first morning back and I was hoping for more weight training and less cardio, since I get enough cardio from spin class. It's free and it's exercise so I'm not going to complain...too much. So yeah, this is the year of Shea. The year I'm finally going to be 100% happy with my body. The year I'm going to get over my food issues and be able to have an ounce of willpower. I think being 35 won't seem so horrible if I feel like I am somewhat "hot" for my age. "She's 35? I can't believe it! I hope I look like that when I'm 35." That kind of thing.

My parents gave me a clock when I was home that they had laying around. I like the clock and think it will look good in my "summer house" entry way but it has the loudest ticking sound ever. I feel like I'm the narrator in Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart". The first night we got home I had it in our bedroom and I told Ryan, "This has to go!" I then put it out in the hall and the next day moved it into the living room by the top of the stairs as I was intending to store it in the basement. That evening I could hear it ticking while watching TV so I moved it to the bottom of the stairs. Tonight I was in the living room after everyone had gone to bed and I start to hear the ticking again. "That's it clock!" I put it in the basement and shut the door. If I can still hear it ticking, I'm going to start thinking I've murdered an old man with a "vulture eye" and hid him in my floor.

The "summer house" is moving along at an alarming speed. While I try to tell my brain that, "It's all going to work out." My brain tells me back "YOU ARE SCREWED, SISTER!" I hate brain. Ryan took pictures on his way home from work Monday and we are both getting excited about the prospect of living in this home. I'm starting to grasp that we are moving away from Santaquin and it's sad. I have some great friends here, I love the school and my connections there and I love having Nana next door. Change is good though and I'm pretty good at keeping relationships going. Still I'm not going to be able to pop over to Karen's and have her put tags back on clothes I want to return with her magic gun. That might have to be spirited away when I move.

They found E.T. in our house! No, it has a tent over it so they can stucco in this weather.

A three car garage so Ryan can have a home for his scooter.

The great room/kitchen.

Our summer house

We like to call the house we're building our "summer home" because we can either laugh about not having sold our current home or we can curl up in a ball and cry. Laughing seems like the better choice. Today we went to see the progress on our new house. They started digging last Thursday and already our foundation is poured. Why did we have to chose such an efficient builder? While we were at the house another neighbor stopped by and introduced herself. She told us how great the neighborhood was and then asked, "were we LDS?" After replying in the affirmative, she went on to tell us how great the ward was. Cool. Grace said a funny thing while we were driving to our new home, marveling at all the stores we had nearby.

Grace: "Mom will be happy because there is a Starbucks."
Me: "Yeah, but I've got to stop drinking those expensive lemonades."
Grace: "Why? Do they give you gas?"
Ryan: "Everything gives your mom gas."

The garages.

The back of the house.

Basement bedroom and family room.

I tried this new thing with my hair, putting it up. What do you think? Oh and that's the basement door into our cold storage room.

Hanna wanted a picture of her with the horses on the pasture behind our house.

You can see the freeway and the high school from our house in the winter. Watch out! The Pioneers are coming. They'll walk you to death.

Gonna dig that hole real good

We met with our builder today at our lot to make sure that our house will be placed properly. They had staked out our home on the lot so we were able to walk it and see how it's all going to look. All I can say is, "This lot is too big!" I'm going to have to get a full-time job just to pay for landscaping. The girls will definitely have all the room they need to play. I noticed the "farm" behind us has a rooster that likes to make noise and I'm already plotting it's demise. They told us they'd start digging tomorrow and I kindly excused myself to take a Xanax. Because remember, I have another house that isn't sold. I'm trying to really exercise some faith in God and the universe and think that, "it's all going to work out." The only problem is, I've been burned before. I had faith with five pregnancies and we all know how that ended. It's hard not to focus on the things you've wanted but didn't get. I know things have worked out many times for me, as evidenced by my two monkeys and Ryan, but when something really big falls though you tend to remember that. I think the added stress of the house has been triggering Evie sadness. I've been feeling her absence more lately recently and it makes me very sad. This is kind of the crappy cycle of grief. You think you're doing super and then, Bam! you're back to where you were a year ago. Recently I've found that if I listen to really loud music in the car, you can't think sad thoughts. So today I listened to Britney Spears' "Womanizer" (confession) really loud and it helped. Anyway, if you can spare a good thought or prayer our way in regards to us selling our house, I'd really appreciate it.

Our lot. I'm hoping this dumpster stays. Think of the possibilities! We also have a porta-potty.

Haven't I done enough?

A couple of weeks ago, realtors from the area toured our house and gave us feedback on it. The only real negative feedback we received was about our front yard or the "weeds" as they said. They aren't weeds (okay there are some) but native plants and wildflowers that we planted on purpose. We resisted the first time we had the realtor tour but now that we have another house being built, we really need to step up our game. I convinced Ryan to rip out the front area wild flowers/native plants, clean it up and put mulch down. It's a good thing we inherited the world's most powerful rototiller from Ryan's Great Aunt Jerry. It's probably pre-war and weighs two tonnes but man, it can rip up anything your heart desires. We call it "The Beast" because you feel like you are wrestling a wild animal when you use it. My tiny little self can't even control it so Ryan always has to do it and ends up sore for days.

We started working on the yard last week during fall break so we could make the kids help us. Nothing says "fall break" like yard work. There was much whining and little actual doing on their part but we got everything ripped out and raked in two days. This Saturday Ryan and I bought a few shrubs and a truckload of mulch to put down. We worked all morning and I have to say, I think it looks really nice.

Before

After

I will give Ryan most of the credit because I hate doing yard work. I like puttering around or pulling weeds but when it comes to hard core yard work, I'd rather supervise. I tell Ryan it's because I did a lifetime of yard work before I was 19, between my parent's house and working for the town. I've already mowed acres of grass, pulled millions of weeds and now it's my turn to be "Leonard" and supervise. It's the same reason I don't like to clean toilets, because I've paid my dues by cleaning many a gross toilet for the Town of Magrath.

Why don't we have matching camouflage outfits?

With soccer and work, it's hard for me to get on here. Although, with how my job has been going lately I could probably spend the majority of my day blogging and no one would be the wiser. I subbed on my days off which I don't really mind doing but it just makes the week seem super busy. Plus we are soccer coaches and had two games this week. Ryan does the coaching but I still watch both girls play which basically takes all night.

We also had an offer on our house that fell through on Monday. Looking back, I don't know why we ever thought the camouflage couple would buy our house. We were their eighth offer since February and they'd backed out on all of them. I'm still feeling bummed about it because the thought of selling your house when you're building another house is very appealing. Ryan's mom (next door) has a MIL apartment so we don't even have to worry about a place to live until our house is built.

On Tuesday, Karen, Angela (my realtor) and I went to to the Ivory Homes design center in Lehi to have an orientation. It's very overwhelming to pick out every little thing in your house. When we built this house we didn't have a lot of choices so it didn't seem as difficult. On the way home Angela ran out of gas on the freeway and we had to push her mini-van to a gas station. Karen steered because she had to pee and those who know her know she has very limited bladder control. She has had five kids. Luckily we ran out right at an exit and about halfway up the exit, two nice young men came and helped us. Mysteriously, when we went to thank them, they had disappeared. No, that didn't happen.

I'm feeling kind of pissy today about people looking at our house who love our house but are unsure about the yard. Listen dorks, the yard is what is great about this house. It's why rich people pay $200,000 for a lot up on the bench. The trees, the view, the privacy, those are good things. If you want a big generic expanse of grass that you'll never use and have to water all the time, feel free to rip out the trees and put it in. As it is now, I can jump on my trampoline naked and no one would ever see. Which would you rather look out your window and see, Mt. Timpanogas and Utah Lake or the side of your neighbors house? I'm getting too worked up. Van Fleet out!

Take a virtual tour of our house plan. Ours will be a little different but you get the idea.

Which name is worse? Lehi or American Fork?

We are 99% sure we will be building a house in Lehi this year. Loooong story short, we found a lot we loved there and are now in the process of getting qualified (no problem since Ryan has made it his mission to keep our credit rating impeccable) and signing many papers. We put money down on the lot and our offer was accepted this week. This is a big deal for us because we are not usually risk taking people which is mostly good because that's why we have no debt. Our house still isn't sold and we can't afford the new house unless we sell this one. People tell me it's done all the time but it's still scary. We are hoping that we can stay in this home for a long time, like until one of us is dead long. It's close to the freeway so Ryan can hop right on and drive to work in only thirty minutes. I told my brother it's close to Cabela's and he asked me, "If Dad was going to have me running daily errands?" It's also close to the Lehi Roller Mills where Kevin Bacon worked in "Footloose" and where the final dance was held. A friend told me not to buy the girls red cowboy boots. And lastly it's close to much shopping except I won't have any money to spend because it will be paying the mortgage.

Looking west. Nice big trees and Karen thinks she saw a goat in there.

Looking south at the house across the street. Ours will not be that fancy.

The view to the south west.

North east.

Our lot. Hanna is loving that there are horses in "our back yard."

Our house but it will have a three car garage and different exterior colours.
